[olug] newb question/distro recommendation

Hello and TIA,

I am going to be decommissioning a few Game and Parks computers tomorrow,
which entails a scrub of the hard drive.

What I would like to do is install a lightweight distro that will install
quickly and do a decent job of recognizing older hardware.  I'm sure some of
the machines will be too old, but I want to try this on as many of them as
possible (a bonus for whoever bids on them at the surplus auction).

So, I have two newb grade questions - would you feel this will sufficiently
scrub the hard drive, and what distro would you recommend?
