'cu -l /dev/ttyS0 -t 9600' works well for these kinds of things
depending on what you're connecting to. Install the uucp package to get
/usr/bin/cu.
It's not be answer to your problem since it seems you prefer minicom,
but it may provide a clue if cu works.
