[olug] Abiword footnotes/Latex plug

For a Ph.D. thesis LaTeX should be a slam-dunk --- you could have the 
document structure built in 1--2 days and then spend all your time on 
it's content. I wouldn't even screw with a graphical LaTeX frontend, 
just get Leslie Lamports LaTeX Guide and you'll LaTeX'ing in 1/2 day. 
For Linux, use teTeX. For Windows: use MiKTeK. If you wan't to get 
started in the lest amount of time, install MiKTeK and Gvim on Windows 
and you be rolling (just learn how to use vim, or emacs, because these 
are really your only two choices). Knowing vim, or emacs, is an absolute 
prereq. (imo) for doing/knowing anything (relative) useful.
