Specifically, the kernel modules for lirc, so I can get my SnapStream USB
remote to work (it's natively supported by lirc). There aren't any lirc
kernel module packages in any ubuntu repo that I could find, and the
instructions I've found for compiling kernel modules on Ubuntu have not
worked.

Now, I have compiled hundreds of kernels over the years, but it's been
awhile, and I don't want to 'break' Ubuntu in any way, so I'm trying to do
it the 'approved' Ubuntu way, and I can't for the life of me make it work.

Does anyone have any good guides for compiling kernel modules on Ubuntu?
