For RAID0 or RAID1 the difference is negligible; my experience is that
software RAID1 takes 2 or 3 percentage points more CPU than 3ware's
hardware RAID1.  Performance numbers via bonnie were nearly identical.

Yes, it does.  I wouldn't do it in software without an SMP system.
