I wouldn't really consider cox a monopoly.

Just in the omaha-metro area alone, the alternatives are plenty:

For Phone service you can either go with qwest, or with one of the many 
mobile phone companies that have some great deals out there.

For cable TV, yes they do have a majority of control over CABLE tv, but 
there is always direct TV, and I'm not sure but doesn't qwest offer cable in 
some areas?

For internet service there is dial-up through one of the billion dial-up 
ISPs out there, or qwest DSL (cable modem in some areas), and direct-TV even 
has its own version of broadband internet.

Now without going into specifics on which product is better, it is fairly 
plain to see in my eyes that cox is very far from a monopoly.  What exactly 
scares you about having all those consumer choices?

I think it is a very neat use of technology where cox can provide all three 
of those services over the exact same physical infrastructure, and I applaud 
them for doing so.  I'm sure if there was a way for them to provide 
electricity and/or other utilities over their system, then they would 
provide those services as well.

I don't have any real opinion about cox as an ISP, other than my service 
seems to be working just fine.  They haven't interrupted service for me, but 
they haven't exactly "wow"ed me either...
