Hrmm...

On my firewall (Debian "potato") eth1 (my external iface) is defined as

iface eth1 inet dhcp

in /etc/network/interfaces and it Just Works (tm).  But I have done a
little... customization to make it work the way I think it should.

I guess it depends greatly which distribution you're using.
