[OLUG] Regarding SCSI filesystem errors from last week

Hey all,

I was helping someone (sorry, can't remember who) last week who had a
problematic Intel ethernet card, and, I believe, was also getting some
filesystem errors on a SCSI disk. Those error messages said something about
"bit already cleared" in them, and I said that you should definitely force a
filesystem check on your next reboot.

Turns out that was good advice - there's been a kernel filesystem
corruption bug floating around in the 2.2.x kernels for quite some time, and
people have been trying to hunt it down - and the symptom is that exact
error message. It also doesn't trip the filesystem error flag, so you won't
get an automatic filesystem check, you have to force it.

Anyway, in the latest Kernel Traffic, there's a discussion of this
problem, and of the fix for it, which was finally discovered. It looks like
the patch will be included in 2.2.14pre10 and later kernels, so my advice
would be to upgrade to 2.2.14 as soon as it comes out, and this problem
should be fixed for you.

You can read about it at http://kt.linuxcare.com/kt19991213_46.html
under topic 4, "Filesystem Corruption Hunt".
