The preceding is how I learned Linux back in 1998 with Red Hat 5.0. The
"Install Linux" part is very substantial though. I installed and
reinstalled about 50 times in order to learn what installation choices
affected which config options. And learning config files (and GUI
config techniques) should be added to the list. 

After installing 50 times and doing some experimentation, I went to my
local LUG meeting and managed to appear credible. When choosing a LUG,
I think it's vital to choose one that's newbie friendly, not one where
a newbie question is treated with scorn. By the way, there's nothing
wrong with belonging to multiple LUGs. At one time I belonged to three
Orlando in-person LUGs. Today I'm on probably 30 LUG lists, and learn
from every one of them.
