Thanks to all. I will follow up on the suggestions.

As an example of what I saw, in case it clears the waters more than 
stirring up additional mud....

each list with appended method, first 2 examples correct followed by 
parts of the combined sort where things go wonky. Skilled programmer I'm 
not, but I can |  and I can vim(a little).
