I think some of you are confusing "rooting" with "installing a custom ROM." Rooting, by itself, does nothing much. It just gives you increased access permission, like having root on you linux box. Custom ROMs are akin to installing linux over top of Windows on your PC.

I was a root monger with my old Motorola Droid, but haven't done so yet on
my new Note 2. Considering it, though the stock build isn't bad at the
moment. Is Cyanogen still the preferred base for most rooted OS builds
these days? One of the things I'm concerned about with rooting the Note 2
in particular is S-Pen support.
