Thx for link I will have to ck that out. Yeh I thot bout Freenas but need to come up with a presentable, low power/noise case. Not to mention RAID controller, backplane etc that would all fit. I think it would be great if there was a DIY kit that would fit the bill.
Checked out Buffalo but closest I found was a 6 bay TeraStation(tm) 5600 for just over $1000. I feel that QNAP & Synology has better package and prices still. But you bring up good point... wonder if I can purchase them w/out disk. I was planning on purchasing disks separately.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-charts/view.  The site keeps up with new products and tests, reviews, and rates them based on a number of factors.  Personally I've had a reliable experience (so long as OPPD is providing power) with my home brew FreeNAS-based solution.  Just a desktop case, bootable compact flash card, and a bunch of drives attached to a RAID controller.  Been running pretty rock solid for 5 years now (again so long as it has power).

IMHO, Buffalotech seems to have some of the best price per TB offerings out there, with decent features (e.g. DLNA, iTunes, iSCSI target, etc.).
 Additionally, when looking at the prices, these are diskful systems as apposed to BYOD, so the price is the price and ready out of the box vice having to also buy a bunch of drives (though I see these are coming down in price these days).
