I was hoping to assign fixed IPs to printers and other devices that
should not change and allow others to used DHCP for when they come and
go, like tablets and laptops. That was what I thought reservation was
supposed to do, the other I know as MAC address filtering, which I set
up in a previous location to block others from getting on my internet
connection. Also then I had fewer devices to set up.
I was talking to a friend who uses Linux and he set up one box to do the
router work. He has set aside certain IPs for fixed devices and lets the
other use DHCP to connect. I have not gotten in to that but he does
networking stuff for his work, so he was pretty familiar with the
process to get it set up.
