UNO hosts monthly "College of IS&T Round Tables", where they have speakers
(usually UNO IT instructors) present on an IT topic. On 2012-10-12, the
speaker is Jeff Bates, Open Source IT Manager at Google. Here is the text
from the official invite:

About the Talk
How does Google participate with open source communities? Jeff Bates, Google
Open Source IT Manager, will address this question, illustrating what open
source
community participation entails (considering business and legal issues) and
what are
the expectations both to open source communities and Google. He will talk
about
Google’s management of open source community participation internally and
how the
organization interfaces with the greater open source landscape. Jeff will
also highlight
how Google releases intellectual property to an open community landscape
and how
the organization addresses employees who have been contributors to various
open
source communities prior to joining Google.

About the Speaker
Jeff Bates is the co-founder of Slashdot.org and was responsible for
building
SourceForge.net as well as running Thinkgeek.com. He has been a frequent
speaker in the Open Source community and has advised various companies and
governments about adoption of open source code and techniques. After years
of
running engineering teams, building data centers and replying to many, many
emails,
he joined Google in 2011 and works on releasing tools and services that
Google has
built to the open source community via code or available as services to the
whole
world. He continues to respond to many, many emails.

The event is open to the public and will be at the Peter Kiewit Institute
in room 279 (unless they need to move it to a bigger room).
