How low-level? You can read the Linux kernel mailing list to get a better
idea of kernel subsystems.
You can compile Gentoo or build Linux From Scratch to get a better idea of
dependencies and what does what.
Or you can just read through some detailed documentation. I don't care for
Ubuntu as a distro, but they have decent user documentation.
