Windows decided to reinvent the Start menu with Vista, because it looks
nicer in a screenshot. Everyone wants a pretty interface, but it takes
longer to browse to what you want. Microsoft said, use search instead (even
though it is slow and doesn't work well).
Sadly, KDE ended up using a similar menu in KDE 4. It looks nicer, but it is
slower to navigate. I don't know why we have to move away from classic menu
structures. People argue that newer app launchers have search, which makes
them better, but my old KDE 3 Start menu also had search built in.
Mac OS X uses a dock instead, which works well if you only ever use a small
handful of apps. But it obviously doesn't cover all use cases.
Gnome 3 and Unity both try to present new solutoins for finding and
launching applications, but I don't like either approach. Honestly, I still
think the best solution is a classic Start Menu with search built-in. But
most days I find myself just hitting Alt-F2, launching Krunner and then
typing in what I want.
