for some people softmod is the way to go. you can use a savegame exploit, or
do an IDE hotswap with XBHDM.

but like i said, if you can solder, use a chip. i don't recommend the
solderless adapters because they can slip, but there are many chips out
there that you can buy. i just carry my favorite brand.

i've done 300+ boxes for 300+ customers, but don't take my word for it.
check out the forums @ forums.xbox-scene.com and decide what works best for
your situation.
