Much of that reputation is based on historical anecdotes, and doesn't
apply to modern ATI/AMD hardware and drivers.  Before I ditched the
desktop with multiple monitors (moved to almost exclusive laptop use
at home), I was running Ubuntu with an ATI card, and it was as close
to being plug-and-play as setting up dual monitors in Windows.
