[olug] ATI Linux Good now?

I have a 6 year old laptop with an ATI mobility card. Whichever linux
driver Ubuntu chose works great. It appears there is no supported
catalyst driver. I too have been using Nvidia cards where possible
since a horrible experience 10 years ago. However, from what I've
been reading in the news, the catalyst driver and the open source
drivers are coming along quite nicely. I really want to like AMD on
this one as they've been releasing a lot of documentation to the
community - without NDAs - for a couple years now and they've
drastically improved their catalyst driver. I don't know if their
open source or catalyst drivers are up to speed with Nvidia's
proprietary driver. I think there are still problems with power
management, "hybrid" graphics, and crossfire. I'm going to try out an
AMD card in my next computer mid-next year when their new integrated
CPU/GPU (Fusion, I think) stuff comes out.
