I have a hybrid backend/frontend I am using for HD content via
Firewire. The spec's for the machine are:
CPU:
processor : 1
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 67
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
stepping : 3
cpu MHz : 1000.000
cache size : 1024 KB
Memory: 2 gig
Hard Drive: 1 TB SATA
I am using the onboard graphics controller (nvidia based) for output to
our plasma tv. Playback is very good without problems. I have noticed
some tearing though when I am recording an HD show, streaming to our
bedroom frontend, and trying to playback HD in our main tv room.
As for general guidelines for HD media playback I would recommend going
with something that is at least dual-core class. I have not had any
luck getting acceptable HD playback with anything less than this. I
have heard others with P4 machines have success but this has never
happened for me. Spend some extra money and get a machine that can do
it right.
