[olug] replacing Windows Server 2003 with Linux distro

+1 for SuSE.  I use OpenSuSE @ two of the business I support.  Has been rock solid for one of the business for 2 years.  The other one, every 2 years or so, it burps on a restart and I have to reload the OS.  I need to upgrade it every 2 years or so ANYHOW so not a huge deal.  I run Samba with roaming profiles, webserver, DHCPD, OSPF/Router, and other items on a 7 yo HP server (single core, 1GB Ram).  Running great today.  8)

Depending on your needs, CentOS is a great server-based distro,
FreeNAS and OpenFiler are both good if all you need is a NAS, and for
a drop-in server alternative check out ClearOS.
