You could put in your openSUSE disc, don't tell it to upgrade because
it won't find a capable system to upgrade. Then tell it to do an
install without formatting the drive. That *might* get you a usable
system. However, the best thing to do would be to backup your /home
files, wipe and do a clean install. If you keep /home on a separate
partition, then you never need to deal with this problem again.
If you need some help tweaking openSUSE for performance, don't
hesitate to ask. I can help you with services/daemons and the like.
