[olug] font problem in X

I can't get fonts to display in X. When I boot up, all the characters
in the gdm greeter are boxes. If I log in anyway, an xterm will display
real characters in its window, but not gnome-terminal or icons or any UI
chrome. It's like I'm missing a font it's trying to use, but I don't
know what it would be or where that is configured. When I open a text
editor and manage to get to the font chooser, every entry in the list is
just boxes. That makes me think TT fonts aren't working (xterm probably
using a console font), but I can see in the Xorg log that it's building
a font path that contains the fonts I have installed. So... I am not
sure what to check next. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
