Sun's directory server - currently called Sun Java System Directory
Server - is based on the old Netscape Directory Server... which Red Hat
purchased and open sourced:

Incidentally, it is packaged into a product called FreeIPA
(http://www.freeipa.org/page/Main_Page). You're better off using that
rather than hacking together your own solution - your successors will
thank you.
