[olug] Remote Desktop

...."use on my linux Server to connect from a client on my network"

That's confusing in terms of X forwarding, I'll take an assuming stab.

I assume your "client" is a windows system. I'd recommend NoMachine. It is
way smoother and faster than Xming or Cygwin. It seems like a hybrid of
Cygwin/XFree86 and VNC. It send images like VNC and also has a sort of X11
connection.

I gave up, probably too quickly, on how to use NoMachine to just listen as
an X11 server.
I tried it once with custom desktop and "run default script on server"
assuming "server" meant the X11 server on the windows machine and it opened
a 100 or so Cgywin Xfree86 labeled windows with gnome slices.

It is nice to just have an Xserver running and just have the graphical
application started with putty and xforwarded to the windows display.

However, it is still faster to use NoMachine and get the entire desktop than
it is to run, for example, OOBase in a single windowed app in Xming.

My limited experience with NoMachine has been positive. It tunnels over your
existing ssh port and the quality is far better than VNC. I would say it's
analogous to RDP on Windows. You get up to two simultaneous connections with
the free version.
