[olug] network switch

I was given  a couple of smartstack Fast Ethernet switches from 
cabletron systems model number ELS100-24TXM has any one had any 
experience with these switches. Why i am asking there is serial port on 
the front for configuration with a null modem cable. the person that i 
got them from said that i can use telnet to get in them but it doesn't 
work. can anyone help please i can use them for a couple non profit 
organizations that are great need of upgrade from a tiny hub of 10 
megabytes.
