[olug] Kubuntu 9.04 networking help on two machines (kind of long)

I have Kubuntu 9.04 on a HP Pavillion dv6815nr laptop with a atheros PCMIA card...the card lights up but the wireless doesn't work.  It used to work in 8.10....although it had issues with the kernel.  I had to hold or continuously press the CTRL key to get it to boot....now it boots fast...so it needs 9.04.

I can connect when wired.

I've tried wifi-radar, wicd and a few others but with so many different options, aticles and tutorials I'm getting befuddled trying to remember which one way just works.

I used to be able to connect when wired... until I disabled something yesterday (Network or NetworkManager) when trying to install one of the above.

I'd be happiest to get wireless working on both machines again....satisfied with getting the laptop on wireless and the desktop connected again (would settle with wired, if need be)


A)  need step by step help please.

B)  in a couple of weeks if I need to change wireless cards -- which card would you recommend?
