So, I will just put in my 2 cents without any long winded explanations.....
I seem to have the exact opposite experience you describe below... For me, ubuntu has been both a stable, reliable and easy to admin server and a great desktop for those I have convinced to convert. I must admit that I run relatively new hardware, but in general, I have not ran into your complaints on newer (within the last 5 years) hardware.
