[olug] Upgrade/password issues on Mandriva

I've got someone trying to upgrade from Mandriva Spring 2009 to 2010.  Install seems to run fine, but at the login for KDE, it seems to start the process, then kick him back to the login screen.
I've had him try a fresh install (his \home is on its own partition), but even after what should be a fresh install, the same issue comes up.  Right now I'm thinking maybe his best option is to roll back to 2009.
Has anyone seen something like this before?  The 2009 seems to be hit or miss with the included NVidia driver (the is the livecd), where it simply stops at a blinking cursor.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

 I ran the Harry Potter books through a spell checker; none of those spells should work.
