[olug] Ubuntu losing network

i had similar problems with a "green" GB swtich. it used some proprietary
method to save on energy consumption.
i had to swap it with a switch where the cable runs were shorter.
for some reason it was the long cable runs on the "green" switch that caused
it to drop connections sporadically.

however, ubuntu may be the problem in this case...

i am also using ubuntu on my laptop, and have struggled with a similar
situation (it gets worse over time). it's gotten so bad i can't use the eth0
for more than 5 minutes without it bouncing up and down. if i leave it there
bouncing, my screen slowly goes crazy and/or i get a kernel panic. every
once in a while the interface goes up without a cable inserted. when that
happens the laptop doesn't want to shut down, and the forementioned problems
occur even without a cable.

i posted about it before.
someone here on OLUG mentioned that there was a linux driver for my intel GB
NIC that messes with the firmware.
rather than be further frustrated with it, i just decided to just go
wireless.

your issues may not be related to either of these scenarios, but maybe you
will find the information helpful

does the live CD do the same thing? it does in my case.
