Don't know what to tell you on that one. I've been a happy Ubuntu
user for years, now. I've had better luck with it recognizing
hardware than with any other distribution. Even on new laptops (Dell
D610 a few years ago, Dell D820 a little over a year ago), it managed
to get the screen resolution perfect, and sound was working on first
boot. Both were unexpected surprises.

What kind of NIC is it?
It may not be releated, but there was a recent issue with the Linux
Intel e1000e driver that could screw up the firmware on a NIC. Intel
has been working with the kernel devs and I believe they tracked down
the bug. Also, Intel has stated that they are working on a fix to
'repair' network cards that were screwed up by the bug. Not sure what
the status of that is.
