A friend of mine has a 6-mo-old Sony hard drive camcorder that he
really loves.  He's anal about technology, so even though I haven't
seen the video myself, I trust that it's as good as he claims.  He's
a Windows guy, though, so I can't comment on its Linux compatibility.

As a general rule, I've always been quite happy with the optical
quality of Canon equipment.  I've got several of their still cameras.
My own camcorder is an ancient miniDV Panasonic that sucks.
