Know, DLInk may have changed BUT you are right about failure rate as a deciding factor when it comes to a piece of equipment that should run with no maint since there are no moving parts. My DLink equipment I used to use started failing and settled around 50%-60% failure among my users. Unacceptable, especially when I put Linksys in there and have not heard back from them (Yes, they are still there and working). 8)
Just my opinion but frequent failure is unacceptable in this type of unit considering the usage.

In our wireless business we have settled on D-Link for reliability, but
I really do think this has a lot to do with the power in a particular
location. The topic comes up periodically on the lists and there are
always people that swear by Linksys, D-Link, Netgear (not so much any
more), Buffalo and Belkin. They all quote failure rate for their
preference.
