Actually, my mistake was based on the missing official attribution to qemu, 
and that I forgot qemu was only LGPL. The COPYING file states:
1. the majority of the code is copyright innotek
 -- if it was based on qemu, this would be quite unlikely
2. VirtualBox includes GPL-incompatible code
 -- if VirtualBox included any non-innotek GPL code, their exception would be
    copyright infringement

While I still wouldn't say VirtualBox is *based on* (as in a fork of) qemu, 
you are correct that it does contain code from qemu.
