Just a thought, have you checked the function keys atop the laptop's keyboard for a video selection key? Usually, hold the "Fn" key to enable their use. My boss' laptop wouldn't boot properly, or so it seemed, similar symptoms, etc. He'd inadvertently switched it to external mode only. Switching it back to LCD only fixed it immediately.
