[olug] does anyone have a CD shredder

Buy a $40 microwave if you don't already have one.

Place disc on styrofoam cup inside the microwave, essentially midway
between the top and bottom.

Run microwave for 3 to 4 seconds (no more!).

Watch the light show.

Examine Disc, try to read it in an old CD-ROM drive.

* WARNING: This is not a recommended way to destroy a disc, only a
RISKY method and visually pretty. Don't do this inside, preferably
outside, in the middle of your yard. If your house burns down,
don't say I didn't warn you. Do not run longer than 5 seconds. Do not
breath in any smoke.

I once heard a story of one local video rental store in the early 1980s
that had a special storage area for certain titles that could be erased
quickly with a modified microwave emitter.

* Note: Microwaves are dangerous - most engineers who work on telecom
towers ask for antennae and dishes to be de-energized before they will
climb them to do work.
