I dropped the adjectives when I came to realization that not only did gratis 
have its own alternate word, but using "free" is in fact incorrect 
abbreviation for "free of charge" ;)

Even the current Merriam-Webster does not condense "free of charge" into its 
definitions for merely "free", thus demonstrating that it can still be 
considered abuse of language.
