Another thought you may want to try.

Go to the console (CTRL+ALT+1 through 6 will get you there):
1. Login as root or a user who can sudo.
2. type: /etc/init.d/kdm (or gdm, xdm depending on your login screen for X)
stop
	This should completely stop X and it's children, check this with:
		ps ax | grep X
	you should get no result.
3. type: alsamixer
4. Look in the Upper Left corner and see if your sound card is shown, if not
send me back what you see.
5. Look at Master, PCM, and make sure they are turned up (adjust with up and
down arrow) and mute is not on (no MM below the slider. Toggle with Space
Bar).
6. If that is all good, then lets play a sound:
	alsaplayer <soundfile>
	If this give you an error about interface or is not installed then:
		apt-get install alsaplayer alsaplayer-text
	Now try again.

Hope that helped,  sometimes down to the basics works best.  You may want to
try the DD thing again in this setup with X and artsd out of your way.

If you go into KDE and turn off the sound system again, does the "dd"
command produce any static sound or does it still say "device busy"?

Command:
  sudo dd if=/dev/urandom bs=1024 count=2 of=/dev/dsp

If that doesn't produce any sound, I would start to suspect that it didn't
detect your sound hardware correctly.
