[olug] Question about associations

Does anyone know of such a program that does "associations" by exstension.  As 
an example, in windows there is "start".   at the command prompt, type in 
"start file.mpg" and it will open up the default associated program with that 
file type.  Does anyone know of any such program that allows me to configure 
the associations with various file types, and it just goes.
for example, run xine with .avi .mpg .mpeg .mov
run xmms for .mp3 .wav
run acroread for .pdf

etc..
