This may or may not be the solution you want, but here's what I do. I
have a Dell desktop PC configured as a standalone firewall router
(running IPCop, which is rather nice and can be configured for QoS).
Instead of installing a wireless adapter, I use a Netgear 802.11g
bridge, and just bridge to the LAN. The Bridge itself is dumb, and
only extends the LAN to my wireless clients. The Dell handles NAT,
DHCP, logging, firewall, etc. This has been working great for me, and
I didn't have to muss with wlan support in Linux. The only thing I'm
not sure of is how QoS and bridging play together, so you may want to
look into that. I originally did this so I could experiment with
link-local stuff like zeroconf/rendezvous.
As an aside, I wouldn't suggest doing much more with your firewall than
NAT, ipchains/iptables and DHCP if you're truly concerned with
security.
