Someone gave you some bad advise or misinformation.

Originally Qwest (then US West) Choice (then TeleChoice) cable modem
service used LANcity cable modems that were not DOCSIS compliant, but
that's because they predated DOCSIS. Around the beginning of '99 (as I
recall), they upgraded the headend to support DOCSIS modems, and began
to transition out the old LANcity modems. After a short period of
testing, it was determined that they were better off leaving the LANcity
modems installed where they were, but using DOCSIS modems for all new
installations.

The cable modem I have in use right now is a standard DOCSIS modem.

At least at the time when I stopped working with them, they were willing
to allow a customer to use their own DOCSIS cable modem with their
service.

Although the use of firewall/routers is not officially supported, it has
been unofficially supported since the beginning. Back in '97 I was
using a Linux box as a firewall/router to provide Internet service to my
entire LAN. This wasn't entirely an uncommon situation.

I've seen people use Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, and others behind a Qwest
cable modem without trouble (heck, I've been using a PIX at home for the
past couple of months).
