I haven't read that particular article, but I did set up an internal
Jabber installation at work recently.

It was quite easy to setup jabberd to authenticate against an LDAP
server, and jabberd 2.0 also has a handy feature to disallow user
account registration, but instead auto-creates user accounts upon first
authentication to the LDAP server.

This removes any requirement to keep a synchronized jabber userlist, as
everything is handled via LDAP.
