yeah, there's always the risk of making the drive into
a boat anchor if you update the firmware.
I had a drive that was doing the same thing at one
point; I took the risk of updating the firmware and
got some additional functionality out of it, but it
ended up gradually getting worse. I tried a firmware
update again, only to have it stop the motherboard's
BIOS while I was booting. <G>
I have a DVD/RW drive in its place now.
