How about the GNU ClamAV?  Don't know about a Mac GUI client, but with
OS-X you should be able to have it scan in the background.  Don't know
about e-mail application integration on the Mac though.  I have it on my
Windows box scanning Outlook e-mails and it seems pretty un-intrusive.
