If you search hard enough and in the right places
(blogs, newsgroups, etc) you may find ways to get your
commercial software to work.

For example, I have WebLogic running on Debian PPC and
Mac OS X.  Both platforms are said to be
"unsupported".  With commercial software, there are
degrees of "unsupported".  This is usually due to
vendors releasing software for Linux the same way they
release software for Windows.  This is also the
primary reason RedHat changed their product packaging.
 For software vendors, they now have RedHat ES 2.1 or
RedHat AS 3.0 as an OS platform instead of x86 kernel
2.4.18 with glibc blah blah blah.

In the case of WebLogic, the package won't expand on
anything but RedHat AS or ES or WS.  However, once
unpacked, I can tarball the directory structure and
install it somewhere else.  In the case of Mac OS X, I
had to get the generic (aka AIX) package, as well as
massage the MAC OS X java environment.

For some vendors, unsuppported simply means it won't
install on an unspported system.  For other vendors,
using alien to convert the packages from rpm to deb
may work.  Some vendors require specific kernel and
library versions and if that configuration breaks due
to security updates, or other version changes, the app
will no longer run.

Some common work-arounds include over writing uname
info into the proc file system, installing multiple
library versions, and getting creative with symbolic
file system links.

Some things just won't run, such as hardware drivers.
