I have a friend that works for Cat in IL (hey, maybe this job is
working with him . . . ) and what Sean said is true -- for Y2k. They
even sent massive amounts of people to .Net training to bone up on
this. But I still get emails from my friend with Java questions now
and again . . . I asked him, "I though you guys were an MS shop?"
His answer: "That plan was scrapped -- too expensive."
He also said that they wouldn't do Linux because they needed someone
to sue if it didn't work out. I haven't talked to him in a while but
it looks like things have changed . . .but with a support contract
with RedHat or Novell, that could the be the reason why they have
Linux boxes.
Actually, I've been to data centers all over the world and I can tell
you that they all had one Unix type machine (usually Linux) and at
least one Windows machine. Even the most hard-core Windows data
center I was even in (Gates himself even came down once to look it
over) had Solaris boxes.
