I believe that Umax will SELL you a driver disk for your scanner for about $15. As much as I used to like Umax scanners, I don't support a company charging for drivers. I have had 2 instances were my customers had Umax scanners and both driver pages had a link on the Umax site saying they would be glad to take my money for the drivers...not a chance. I sent the users out to get a Canon LIDE scanner for $80 and they have both been VERY happy.
BTW: The Canon scanners were both USB also. 8) Much easier to setup and run.

thanks for the parallel-port in xp examples...
...just my 2 cents then, don't use "umax" scanners.
I thought for sure I eventually came across a page in the microsoft.com
domain explicitly stating that parallel port scanner support was dropped
from XP, but I guess not (couldn't find it). I'm pretty sure my scanner
had built in support under win98 but its impossible to work in winXP. I
wish I could find a more absolute statement, but I only found references
to problems:
"Windows XP users: A Windows XP Patch is required. Use the form above to
check for Windows XP compatibility. All UMAX parallel port scanners (i.e.,
Astra 300P, 600P, 610P and 1210P) are not supported under XP."

"The biggest exception is software tied to a specific hardware component.
For example, if you have an old parallel port-based scanner, you probably
have software that allows you to interact with that scanner. Although
Windows XP does support parallel ports, don't expect your scanner hardware
and software to run under Windows XP. Sure, there's a chance that it will,
but this tends to be the exception rather than the norm."

|Windows XP has built-in support for it.
|I did not have to load any drivers for Windows XP Pro to see it.
|I have used Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Photo Editor with the scanner.
|The Scanner and Camera wizard detects it just fine.
