[olug] completely disabling history in firefox

I'm trying to turn off that annoying little dropdown box from the URL
bar in Firefox on SuSE 9.1 Pro.  I try to chmod the history.dat file in
my .mozilla/firefox folder, but when I run Firefox, it automatically
changes permissions from 444 to 644.  Does anyone have a clue about what
to do about this?

BTW, the Firefox was installed from SuSE's rpm off their ftp site.
