[olug] mystifying cable modem problem

Dumb idea that has worked for me . . . 

Do you have a splitter on your cable line to your modem?  If so,
remove it and hook it up directly to your line.  If you can get a
connection, get a new (higher-powered) splitter.  Or, better  yet,
don't use a splitter at all.

Seems weird, but a slight surge might have went through the line and
fried the splitter somewhat.  Some modems might be able to use the low
signal from there, some may not.
