Hmm . . .I thought it was just me, but I'm glad that I'm not alone.  I
dunno why printers don't cooperate with me, but they stubbornly refuse
to play along -- until I use brute force, of course.

Common ways to arm yourself before going into a Printer War:
    o read up on your printer on  LinuxPrinting.org.  Better yet,
chose from one of their "works perfect!" list
    o read up on CUPS configuration.
    o Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.
